Almeria Airport

Almería airport is one of the main driving forces behind the tourism potential of Almería province. Situated in the bay of Almería, eight kilometres from the city, it has excellent connections with the other tourist destinations in the province, such as Cabo de Gata, Aguadulce, Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido or Mojácar. It is the third most important Andalusian airport in terms of passenger numbers, after Málaga and Seville, and the seventeenth amongst all Spanish airports.

Over the past decade, growth has been continual at Almería airport, rising from having 484,494 passengers in 1992 to almost half a million in 2000. During 2001, 2002 and 2003, the number of passengers dropped slightly and, the figures for last year being 14,918 in terms of aircraft movements and over 830,000 in terms of passengers.

The airport has one runway, the 08-26, measuring 3,200 by 45 metres, with a maximum capacity of 26 operations per hour. Despite the fact that this capacity is sufficient to deal with current traffic, the Master Plan has found that measures need to be taken with respect to the airfield. Although these will not involve the construction of new runways or the extension of the present one, they will improve the airport's capacity to meet the estimated demand. The apron measures 77,550 square metresand has eleven positions. There is a taxiway parallel to the runway with access to both departure points. In August 2002, the new freight terminal building entered into service. The passenger terminal building, remodeled in 1995, covers a surface area of 9,400 square metres and has a capacity to deal with 1,300 passengers an hour.

The main measures that have been undertaken in terms of the airfield are as follows: extension of the taxiway and the construction of a new rapid exit taxiway - both implemented and in service -, the expansion of the apron for commercial aircraft with an area for freight aircraft, the replacement of the current ILS category I (Precision Instrumental Approach System) for a new one and the installation of an approach light system for departure point 08.
