Berlin Schoenefeld International Airport

Basics
Schönefeld is located 15 miles (24 km) southeast of the center of Berlin. The airport is small, and the arriving and departing flights are exclusively from Europe. The airport Web site is in German. Even if you don't read German, you can make use of:

  • An airport map
  • Info on the Airport Express (see below)
  • Transportation links (click on the icons on that page)

Taxi
Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall. Travel time is about 45-60 minutes to the center of Berlin, and the fare will cost about 60-70 deutsche mark ($32-$38).

Airport Express
The S-Bahn Airport Express (suburban elevated trains) leaves Schonefeld Station about every 20 minutes for central Berlin, with stops at Alexanderplatz, Fredrichstrasse, and Bahnhof Zoo in the center of Berlin. The airport S-Bahn Station is a ten-minute walk from the terminal, and frequent shuttle bus service is also available. Fare is 3.50 deutsche mark ($2).

If your hotel is in the eastern part of Berlin, then Alexanderplatz or Fredrichstrasse would be the appropriate stops. If your hotel is in the western part, exit at the Zoo Station stop. Your hotel will be a short taxi ride from the station.

Rental Car
Avis, Sixt-Budget, Hertz, Eurocar and others are represented at the airport.

Airport Facts

Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport (Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld) (IATA: SXF, ICAO: EDDB) is an international airport located in Schönefeld immediately south of Berlin, Germany. It is referred to as "The Holiday Airport", as it has mostly international charter flights. Schönefeld was once the major civil airport of East Germany (and only airport serving East Berlin).
It lies outside the city, unlike the other two Berlin airports, Tegel International Airport and Tempelhof International Airport, and therefore is not as much a source of noise pollution.

Schönefeld is slated to be transformed into Berlin Brandenburg International Airport. Once the new expansion of the terminal starts construction, Tempelhof airport will close (initially slated for October 30, 2004, but still open for the time being). Six months after the airport is renamed and the new section opened, Tegel airport is to close (effectively sometime in 2007).

The airport is served by the
Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld railway station. This station is the terminus of line S9 of the Berlin S-Bahn, and is served by mainline railways as well.

Airlines
Schönefeld International Airport has three terminals; A, B and C. Most airlines are not designated a particular terminal. All terminals are connected.
