Bilbao Airport

The new Bilbao Airport, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, is one of the most important examples of Bilbao's recent modernisation and reflects the new vigour expressed by this city. The airport forms part of the important competitive offer of the Vizcaya capital, which has put into action one of the most significant urban projects in its history and includes the following: the Guggenheim Museum, the Euskalduna Palace, the Abandoibarra project, the underground, etc.

During 1999 and 2000, the extension of the two runways, a new aircraft parking platform, a new control tower and the new terminal were opened.

The new terminal, measuring 32,000 metres squared, will be able to handle four million passengers a year and three thousand in rush hour. This action is in response to the Bilbao Airport's constant increase in traffic. Its importance as a scheduled traffic airport is reflected in the fact that this type of traffic represents 93% of the total, 30% of which is international.
