Brive La Roche Airport, located in Brive-La-Gaillarde, France was formerly the main airport that serviced this city and entire region of France where it is located. At one time, this airport was a full service airport receiving flights daily with Airlinair flights arriving with passengers commuting to and from Paris. A larger, more modern airport has replaced Brive La Roche as the main commercial flight facility for Brive La Roche, but the older airport is still functioning.
The former main airport has undergone a reduction in traffic on account of the need for a new, more modern and efficient facility. Located just three kilometers from the city of Brive-La-Gaillarde, the city was in the perfect position to provide a mode of transportation for individuals and travelers coming and going to the capital, Paris. With just one main terminal, it was able to service a regular schedule of daily flights with airline carrier, Airlinair. The one terminal also provided services such as car rental companies, transportation, and commercial cargo transportation.
In 2010 a new airport and terminal was proposed and built, replacing the terminal dome at Brive La Roche as the main commercial and passenger airline carrier for the Limousin region. This was done in order to move the airport from the expanding residential area as air traffic has increased significantly in recent years, and also to provide newer facilities. The airport has remained open in order to provide local and small plane facilities for the surrounding area and commercial interests. Because of this shift, travel related industries have moved from their locations within the terminal to the new structure.
The smaller airport is now able to easily manage the number of daily flights that are regularly scheduled, as well as incoming flights by private plane owners from other regions. Growth in other areas has also been a result of the airport's status change, and local businesses are able to grow their industries easily, investing in airline transportation in order to move their goods and clients. Several new projects have also been proposed in order to replace some of the income and revenue that was already lost. Flight schools and private charter companies are two newer proposals that would do well in the existing space and are expected to be in place within a couple years.
The Brive La Roche airport in France was never a large airport to begin with, but it has served a very important purpose in the community. Even thought it has been replaced with a newer airport facility, its importance continues to exist and the facility continues to be used. Local officials and the airport owners have adapted the facility services to the growing community, its businesses and transportation needs.
