Cadiz Airport
Jerez Airport is one of the main axes for tourist development in the province of Cadiz. When the present infrastructures were designed, it was thought that the airport would basically handle domestic scheduled flights, but present trend indicates that this airport is of important tourist value.
Over the last few years, Jerez Airport has grown immensely, its passenger traffic increasing from almost 300,000 in 1993 to over 840,000 in 2003. This is mainly due to the fact that since 1993 there has been more international traffic, mostly charter flights, although over the last few years the international airlines are gradually operating more scheduled flights. The passenger traffic at Jerez Airport, which in 1992 and 1993 was almost 88% domestic, has experienced a strong increase in international passengers, with domestic passengers constituting only 52.5% of the total in 1999. The main places of origin / destination, as well as Spain, are Germany and the United Kingdom.
Jerez Airport has one runway, the 03-21, which measures 2,300 by 45 metres and has three exit roads. It has the capacity to handle ten manoeuvres per hour. There are three aircraft parking platforms: one for commercial traffic with six positions, another for general aviation and the third, which dates back to the military installations closed in 1993, is used by the flying school Bae Systems and when the other platforms are saturated. The passenger terminal dates was built in 1992 and has the capacity to handle 1,200 passengers per hour.
The extensions to the terminal building and the airfield are to be completed. The construction of a taxi way parallel to the runway from departure point 21 is currently being drafted, which will allow for access to the apron, along with a series of actions in the movement area: the extension of around 47,000 square metres of the commercial aviation apron, the adaptation of the former military apron and the construction of new roadways on the air side.
With these actions, the airport will be able to gradually absorb the forecast traffic increase.
