Edinburgh International Airport

Basics
Edinburgh Airport is located 11 miles (17 km) west of the city. There is an Edinburgh tourist information desk in the arrivals hall. Most international flights into Scotland land at Glasgow Airport. Flights from within the UK, however, and flights from Dublin, Amsterdam, and Brussels do arrive at Edinburgh.

The airport Web site is part of the BAA Web site with links to seven British airports. BAA is British Airport Authority. Use the Edinburgh Airport Web site to locate:

  • Floor plans of the airport's single terminal
  • Information on getting to the airport
  • Flight information

Taxi
Plenty of taxis are available outside the terminal. Note that the taxis at Edinburgh Airport are not the large black cabs you usually see in the UK, but are standard cars, as required by a local law. Fare to central Edinburgh is metered and will cost about ?13 ($21). Travel time is about 25 minutes; longer during the rush hours.

Bus
Lothian Region Transport and Guide Friday buses leave the terminal every 15 to 30 minutes for Waverly Bridge in the center of Edinburgh, above Waverly Rail Station. The fare is ?3 ($4.50), with a travel time of 25 to 40 minutes.

Train
Trains run from the Waverly Station to Glasgow and other destinations in England and Scotland. The train Web site has a timetable of trains.

Rental Car
All major European car rental companies have counters in both Edinburgh and Glasgow. A rental car is quite convenient if you are traveling to areas outside of the city center.

Airport Facts

Edinburgh Airport (IATA: EDI, ICAO: EGPH), (also called Turnhouse) located in Edinburgh, Scotland, is the sixth largest international airport in the UK. It is located 13 km (8 miles) West of the city centre.

Edinburgh Airport is owned by BAA plc, the company that also owns London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton airports.

The present terminal building, designed by Robert Matthew, was constructed in 1977 and has been heavily upgraded in recent years, with new car parking facilities and an extended arrivals hall. A new control tower was completed in 2005.

Passenger Information
In 1991 2,339,538 passengers passed through Edinburgh Airport, by 2002 that had increased to 6,906,731 passengers. That represents an annual increase of 10.6%. Edinburgh Airport recorded 8 Million passengers in the rolling year to the end of January 2005; the first time that that milestone has been reached.

Future Plans
There are plans to expand Edinburgh airport by adding a third runway, although this is unlikely to be completed in the next 30 years. Because of its central location, it is easily reached by the M8 and M9 motorways, and is nearby a major railway line meaning that it is within easy reach of most of the country.

The Scottish Executive announced in 2003, plans to extend a rail link to Edinburgh Airport. More details can be found on the Edinburgh Airport Rail Link Project website. A proposed tram route is expected to connect to Edinburgh Airport when complete in 2009. Currently an express bus service links the airport to Edinburgh City Centre.
