Airport Facts

The most modern, easiest and colourful gateway to Istanbul which has always been a mosaic of cultures throughout history is Atatürk Airport International Terminal. This building which was built in a very short time but with state-of-the-art technology is ready to welcome you with its large array of shopping areas and experienced personnel.

Atatürk International Airport (IATA: IST, ICAO: LTBA) is an international airport in Yesilköy, Istanbul, Turkey. Located on the European side of the city, it is 15 kilometers (9 miles) southwest of downtown. The airport is named in honor of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the father of modern Turkey.

There are two terminals, one domestic and one international. Inaugurated in 2001, the international terminal is considered one of the most efficient and modern terminals in the world. Prior to the new terminal opening, a single terminal handled both domestic and international traffic and was very crowded. The domestic terminal, now relieved of international traffic, is spacious, despite its 1970s design.

Atatürk shares traffic with Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, which is on the Asian side of Istanbul. The two airports both provide domestic and international service to the Istanbul area, but booming passenger demands suggest that a 4th airport will be required by 2007, as the Hazarfen Airport is not big enough to support international flights.
