Kristiansand Airport

Kristiansand Airport, Kjevik is situated northeast of the city. It is 16 km and 15-20 minutes drive from the city to the airport.

History
The airport's construction started in 1938, and it was officially opened 1 June 1939, with a concrete runway of 1000 meter. In addition it had also a facility to land seaplanes. The first plane to land officially was a DC-2 from KLM, flying from Oslo to Amsterdam

The airport during WW2
When the Germans attacked Norway on 9 April 1940 the airport had a small group of soldiers attached to it. After some light attacks from passing german planes and rumors of advancing German forces, the Norwegian forces retreated after trying to block the runway with barbed wire. That was not very successful and at 1630 in the afternoon a German Junkers Ju 52 that had participated in the attack on the airport at Sola managed to land. The airport was quickly reinforced and allready on 12 April it had 30 Messerschmitt Bf 109E stationed there. The notorious German SS leader Reinhard Heydrich who also was a Luftwaffe pilot was one also using the airport. During the rest of the war the airport played an important part in the German defence of occupied Norway.

Todays airport
The airport has a paved runway of 1990 x 45 meters, but according to regulations only 1840 meters can be used. It has connections with Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, Copenhagen and Amsterdam. There is a bus service with Kristiansand, Lillesand, Grimstad and Arendal. The Royal Norwegian Air Force has a training center at the airport.
