Murcia San Javier airport is situated on the north shore of the Mar Menor, in an inner lagoon of 170 kilometres which is perfect for doing all kinds of sports: water sports, golf, climbing, trekking, etc. The airport's strategic position brings it close to a Mediterranean culture, founded on the pillars of different civilizations and settlements that left their mark and influence. Besides, the weather conditions - with an average annual temperature of 19 degrees - are ideal for both winter and summer tourism.
Murcia San Javier is an air base open to civil traffic, as stipulated in Royal Decree 1167/1995 of 7 July on the use of airdromes used jointly as an air base and an airport, and of air bases open to civil traffic. Thus, the airport share runways with the General Air Academy, where future Air Force officials are trained.
Since 1996, San Javier airport has experienced linear growth in passenger traffic and has consequently become a fundamental node with regards holiday and leisure transport to and from the Region of Murcia. During 2001, 2002 and 2003, it was one of the Spanish airports which experienced the most growth with 39, 44 and 77 percent respectively.

The San Javier-Murcia Airport (IATA Airport Code MJV) is a military air base and passenger facility located in San Javier, 17 miles south of Murcia, Spain. It is operated by the AENA (Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea, or, Spanish Airports and Aereal Navigation) association.
The Murcia airport can receive airplanes up to the size of Boeing 757 or 767. It has been declared fire category 5 by the IATA, and it has one ambulance available. Because Murcia is a popular destination for charter groups, the airport is flown by a number of charter airlines.
Over the last few years Murcia Airport has got busier thanks to the arrival of several low cost airlines. According to the Spanish Airport Authority ( Aena ) the passenger numbers have jumped from just 88,608 in 1995 to a staggering 848,037 in 2004.
