Oviedo Asturias Airport
In recent years, the airport of Asturias has been modernised and its facilities extended to improve the services offered to air transport users. In 1995, the terminal building doubled in size to be able to deal with the one million two hundred annual passengers. Moreover, in 1998 it was granted the status of customs airport for the export and import of goods.
It currently has a single runway measuring 2,200 by 45 metres with a capacity for fifteen operations per hour. Although this is sufficient for handling the current and even foreseeable volume of traffic, the airfield and apron have been improved to increase the operating capacity.
The passenger terminal extension work was completed by the end of 2003. The main new item has been the creation of an overhead boarding module with three airbridges for direct passenger access to the plane and of two remote boarding areas. This first floor has shopping and eating areas.
The work included the building of a VIP lounge and the extension of remote boarding lounges, the luggage collection area and the authorities' lounge. Furthermore, the waiting area has views of the apron.
Other completed actions include the installation of the inspection system for one hundred percent of all hold luggage for the detection of dangerous objects inside the luggage checked in, the creation of a new taxiway and the expansion of the airport car park with the construction of 172 new places for employees, airlines and dealers, equipped with shelters similar to the current ones and with independent access control for employees and customers. As such, the car park now has a total of 696 parking bays.
