Salamanca-Matacan Airport Information

Salamanca Airport is part of the Matacán air base open to civil traffic. Since 1963 this air base has been the site of the Matacán Group of Schools, belonging to the Spanish air force. It is situated fifteen kilometres to the east of the city, falling within the municipal districts of Machacón, Calvarrasa de Abajo and Villagonzalo de Tormes.

Salamanca has two runways: an asphaltic one measuring 2,500 by 60 metres and another hard ground one measuring 2,010 by 122 metres. It also has an apron for civil aircraft. This measures 63,000 square metres and can accommodate up to six medium-sized commercial aircraft and several general aviation aeroplanes.

The passenger terminal, which was inaugurated in 1981, is a single-story building comprising both the departures and arrivals facilities. Its total surface area is 1,027 square metres and it contains a general lobby, a check-in area with four desks, a boarding area, an arrivals area with a baggage-reclaim carousel and a cafeteria. This building also houses the secretariat, management and administration offices, as well as the operations room.

The airport also boasts a rescue and fire fighting service, a bird eradication service and a flying school situated in the general aviation area. There are however no specific facilities for the loading and unloading of cargo.

Airport Facts

Getting there
The airport is located to the east of Salamanca, at fifteen kilometres along the road which links Salamanca to Avila, in the city limits of Encinas de Abajo. The only public transport to get to or leave the airport is the taxi.

In 2004 Salamanca Airport also handled 9,972 aircraft movements. According to Master Plan Directorate forecasts, which were updated in February 2004, these statistics will rise to 31,000 passengers in 2005; to 41,000 in 2010; and to 47,000 in 2015.

In order to keep up with future demand, the Salamanca Airport Planning Report proposes a number of gradual improvement works for the airport, of which we would highlight the current construction of a new passenger terminal that includes areas: a lounge and transit area for passengers, a technical area to facilitate baggage management and check-in, and a shopping area.
