Airport Facts

Stuttgart Airport (in German Flughafen Stuttgart, formerly Flughafen Stuttgart-Echterdingen) (IATA: STR, ICAO: EDDS) is an international airport serving Stuttgart, Germany.

The airport is situated in the south side of the Stuttgart metropolitan area, with portions lying in three cities. The terminal and landside facilities are in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, while the runways cross the boundary between Stuttgart and Filderstadt. It is the 6th most important airport in Germany with about 8.8 million passengers in 2004. It is the main airport for the
Bundesland Baden-Württemberg.

History
The airport was established in 1939, replacing the old airport in Böblingen. In 1945 the US Air Force took over the airport; it still maintains a base on the southern side of the airport. In 1948 the airport was returned to the German authorities.

The airport was extended after World War II; the airstrip was extended to 1800m in 1948, then to 2250m in 1961 and finally to 3345m in 1996.

After the replacement of the old 1938 terminal was finally finished in 2004, there are four terminals to service passengers.
