Tarragona Airport
Reus Airport is situated approximately 3 kilometres to the south-east of the city and approximately 13 kilometres from Tarragona.
The traffic at Reus airport is marked by a very high number of international charter flights, exclusively for tourists, and most especially from May to October. More specifically, the charter traffic with the European Union, above all from Great Britain, represents 88 per cent of the total airport figure. In terms of scheduled traffic, it is mainly with Madrid -which represents 95 per cent of the scheduled domestic flights- in a uniform fashion throughout the year.
In 2004, in addition to 1,138,009 passengers, Reus managed 21,608 aircraft movements and 11.3 tonnes of cargo, which situates it in 18th place by traffic volume among all Spanish airports.
In 2004, Reus Airport embarked on the implementation of an environmental management system and in December of the same year was awarded the ISO 14001 Environmental Management certificate by AENOR (Spanish Association of Regulation and Certification). This award, which has international validity for three years, certifies that the airport complies with all the environmental requirements of regulation UNE-EN ISO 14001.
The environmental management system implemented at Reus Airport facilitates compliance with current legislation, prevents possible accidents and also reduces costs in that it improves the efficiency of recycling and waste management processes. Similarly, the system monitors all airport activities that have a potential direct or indirect impact on the environment and promotes a series of environmental improvement objectives.
One of the main objectives in this respect for 2005 is the implementation of a wildlife monitoring service based on the use of birds of prey to control bird populations naturally and keep the airport grounds clear as a means of ensuring the safety of aircraft and staff.

Airport Facts
Reus airport dates back to 1935, when the Reus Flying Club decided to build a landing field and purchased land for this purpose. The following year, two natural ground runways, of 1,100 by 60 and 850 by 25 square metres respectively, were already in operation. The land was also used to set up one of the three airdromes during the Civil War that were based around the city of Reus. The other two were located in Maspujol and Salou.
After the war, Reus airport continued to house the military facilities, but was also opened to civil traffic. . 1952 saw the construction of a compacted runway 2,200 by 45 metres - to replace the larger of those that already existed - and a parallel taxiway.
In 1957, Reus was opened to domestic air traffic and in the sixties charter flights became more commonplace, which gave rise to the permanent adaptation of the airport to new needs. In 1974, a passenger terminal building and a platform for commercial aircraft were built, the latter of which was enlarged in 1976. The terminal building was also extended in 1978, 1979 and 1988.
In October 1998, the army abandoned all the military facilities within the airport complex, except for a small aircraft parking platform. Since then, Reus airport has been exclusively for civil use.
