Airport Facts

The importance of Vitoria Airport lies in its volume of cargo traffic. In 2004, it was the third-ranked airport in Spain, after Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona in volume of cargo handled (43,684 tons), which represented seven percent of all cargo handled in airports in Spain.

Cargo traffic has increased substantially at Vitoria Airport, especially since 1994 (in 1993 it handled 427 tons), due to the fact that certain cargo companies have chosen this airport as the point of arrival, for subsequent distribution, of perishable goods and the point of departure to their numerous destinations for other types of goods (parcels). International cargo traffic has also increased dramatically since the removal of customs barriers between EU countries.

Passenger traffic has declined somewhat in recent years, mainly as a result of strong competition from airports located in the immediate vicinity, the lack of existing supply (marked by a distinct shortage of international connections), improved land communications, etc.

Vitoria Airport has a single runway, the 04-22, measuring 3,500 by 45 metres, a CAT II/III ILS system and two linked aprons, one measuring 20,000 square metres with three stands for type C aircraft, and the other measuring 100,000 square metres with eleven stands. It also has a building to handle passenger traffic, a cargo terminal and an industrial zone.
