Zakynthos Airport Information

Zakynthos International Airport -- also known as Zakynthos Dionysios Solomos -- began its operations in 1972. It started out small, only operating flights within Greece, but expanded in 1981 to international flights. In 2008, a brand-new airport was built to replace the original, as it was being overwhelmed with the increasing arrivals and departures. The airport now operates much more quickly and efficiently due to its spacious new layout.

Zakynthos Airport is located 6 kilometers south of the town of Zakynthos and only 1 kilometer from the resort town of Laganas. About 1.1 million passengers pass through Zakynthos Airport each year, with Olympic Airlines providing frequent flights to Athens. Zakynthos is also served by several low-cost European airlines and seasonal charter planes. Surprisingly, no planes depart or land during the night. However, this is not because all the Greeks are sleeping; it is because the endangered loggerhead turtles lay their eggs on the beaches at night, and the noisy planes would disturb them.

If you are heading to the airport, it would be helpful to know which facilities Zakynthos provides. The airport has an information and help desk, duty-free shops, a cafe/bar, police station, parking only a short distance from the terminal, banking and ATM, and rental-car offices. There are a total of eight airlines that operate out of Zakynthos: Olympic Airlines, Air Berlin, Air Italy Polska, Austrian Airlines operated by Lauda Air, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways, and Viking Airlines. There are also seven travel agencies associated with Zakynthos Airport.

You may be wondering about transportation to and from the airport. By car, Zakynthos Airport is just a short distance from the city center. To travel from the airport to your destination, you can rent a car, take the bus or take a taxi right in front of the passenger terminal. Public buses pass by frequently during the operating hours of the airport. Also, many of the surrounding hotels and resorts provide a private bus or car service of their own, so you'll want to contact your hotel beforehand to find out. Currently there are two rental-car agencies with desks located in Zakynthos Aiport: Hertz and Europcar.

If you are visiting Zakynthos for the first time, you may want to know a little more about island. It is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea, and it is located off Greece's west coast. It is named after Zacynthos, who was the son of Arcadian chief Dardanos. Most of the beaches and towns you'll be visiting are situated along the south and east coasts of Zakynthos because the west and north coasts are so mountainous, with many cliffs that have dangerous drop-offs hundreds of feet into the sea.

Zakynthos International Airport's code is ZTH. You can contact them with any question at or visit them online.
