Airport Facts
Zaragoza Airport is regarded as an aerodrome for joint use as an air base and airport, as stipulated by Royal Decree 1167/1995 of 7 July. The airport is mainly used as a distribution centre for cargo, which has necessitated the specialization of its facilities (such as the extension of the area designated for cargo), as well as work on the passenger terminal.
The region is currently undergoing increasing industrial and economic development, with more and more industrial activities emerging, which will lead to a greater increase of air traffic, especially cargo traffic, with operations in a radius encompassing the major European airports. Added to this is the privileged location of the city of Zaragoza, at the centre of the north-eastern quadrant of the peninsula. This area has a total population of more than twenty million people within a three hundred kilometre radius and includes cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia, all of which have excellent road connections.
In 2004 the airport handled 215,445 passengers, 9,384 operations and 9,160 tons of cargo. Sixty per cent of the passenger traffic relates to the scheduled domestic variety.
Zaragoza Airport currently has two runways, the 12R-30L and 12L-30R, measuring 3,718 by 45 metres and 3,000 by 45 metres respectively and belonging to the Spanish Ministry of Defence. The apron measures 95,000 square metres. The terminal building was remodelled in 1996 and has a built surface area of 5,500 square metres, with an hourly capacity of 600 passengers in arrivals and 450 in departures.
