Zurich International Airport

Basics
The Zurich airport is located (12 km) north of the center of Zurich. There is a tourist information office in the arrivals area of terminal B, where transcontinental flights arrive. There is also a tourist office in the central rail station, the Hauptbahnhof. The airport's Web site offers:

  • Maps of the terminals: Check-in A, Check-in B
  • Arrival and Departure Information
  • LiveCam "Sensational Snapshots" (judge for yourself!)

Taxi
Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall. The fares are metered and will be about 55 Swiss francs ($36). Travel time to the center about 20 minutes, up to 40 minutes during rush hours.

Train
The easiest and best way to central Zurich is with the Swiss Rail (SBB) feeder service. Trains leave directly from the airport rail station, which is underneath the airport. It is a short walk from the arrivals area. Trains depart the airport station for Zurich Hauptbahnhof (central) every 10 to 15 minutes all day, travel time to Zurich is 10 minutes.

There are also direct trains to many Swiss cities such as Bern, Lucerne, Interlaken, Geneva, Chur, and others. The fare is about 10 Swiss francs ($7) First Class and 6 Swiss francs ($4) Second Class. There's plenty of luggage space; the train easy to use, with frequent departures. Along with Geneva and the London Gatwick Express, this is probably the best airport transportation in the world.

Rental Car
If you are traveling outside of Zurich, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar, and Sixt (Eurodollar) are represented at the airport. Before you rent a car look at the train service. For cities like Bern where a car is not needed, the frequently departing train will put you in the center of the city. From there you can walk, or take a short taxi ride to you final destination.

Airport Facts

Zurich International Airport (IATA: ZRH, ICAO: LSZH) also called Kloten Airport, is located at 47°29' N 8°32' E in Kloten, canton of Zurich, Switzerland and managed by Unique Airport. It is Switzerland's largest international flight gateway and hub to Swiss International Airlines.

In 2003, Zurich International completed a major expansion project in which it built a new parking garage, a new midfield terminal, and an automated underground train to move passengers between the existing terminal complex and the new terminal.

Zurich International lost traffic when Swissair shut down its operations. When Crossair swallowed Swissair and emerged as Swiss International Airlines, traffic grew again.
