Things to Do in Frankfurt
After settling into Frankfurt International Airport hotels, guests can rent a car or hop on the U-Bahn to get to the downtown area and explore the top sites. To get the most out of one excursion, stop by Römerberg. This plaza, just west of Dom, spans a lengthy block and is a gathering spot for both locals and visitors. The central square is lined with displays of 14th and 15th century architecture, giving it an exquisite Medieval feel. It contains the remains of Roman settlements at the Archäologische Garten, the 12th century Alte Nikolaikirche church and the Gothic-style Wharfinger's Tower, and in winter the site becomes the home of the renowned Christmas market.
Frankfurt also has a stunning array of cultural and historical institutions, many of which can be found at the Museum Embankment along the Main river. Here, you can peruse the galleries and exhibits of the German Architecture Museum, German Film Museum, Liebieg House and Jewish Museum. Keep in mind that most museums are closed on Mondays, and each Saturday morning until noon the grounds of the Museum Embankment become a sprawling flea market.
