Jorge Newbery Airfield Information

Although the Ezeiza Ministro Pistarini International Airport is the main airport in the Buenos Aires region, affording both domestic flights and routes to other continents, the Jorge Newbery Airfield is also a useful resource for travelers who are going short distances. This airport, named for aviator Jorge Newbery, is primarily used for domestic flights. Since 2010, however, the airport is also used for flights to Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The Jorge Newbery Airfield is located a mere 15 minutes by car from downtown Buenos Aires.

More than 10 airlines operate flights out of the Jorge Newbery Airfield. The airline with the most destinations is Aerolíneas Argentinas, which flies to cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, and San Martin de los Andes. Other airlines at this airport include LAN Airlines, which goes back and forth to Santiago, Chile, and Andes Líneas Aéreas, which flies to cities that include Puerto Madryn and San Salvador de Jujuy. LAN Argentina also operates flights, with destinations such as San Juan and Río Gallegos.

This airport is far less crowded than the Ezeiza Ministro Pistarini International Airport, though busy hours can occur during the middle of the day. If you have a domestic flight first, but then need to get to another international city, there is a chance that you might land in Jorge Newbery Airfield on the domestic leg of your trip and then need to transfer to the larger international airport. If you book your flights this way, always make sure you leave ample time for the travel between the two airports so you don't miss your second flight. You may be able to get a shuttle between the airports, or you can always exit the airport at the ground transportation door and look for a cab to take you. The drive between the two airports is approximately 45 minutes, assuming no traffic problems.

Despite its small size, you can still find a couple of food courts and some shopping within the Jorge Newbery Airfield to keep you busy while waiting for a flight departure. Some of the places to eat even afford you views of the neighboring Rio de la Plata. Thanks to its location within Buenos Aires, travelers will also find a good amount of local hotels at which to stay during a layover, or the night before an early flight. In addition to taking a taxi to this airport, or arriving by rental car, it is also possible to get a limo service or take a public bus. If you do get a taxicab to the airport, it is advisable to hail a black and yellow cab, or call a legitimate cab service from the hotel, do not flag down an unlicensed cab driver on the street.
