Airport Facts

The history of the present Santiago Airport dates back to the second government of Carlos Ibáñez del Campo (1952 -1958) which ordered the construction of a national airport network to accommodate the new aircraft and anticipate the advent of jet aircraft which would revolutionize the global air transport industry. At the same time, the Los Cerrillos Airport, already absorbed into the city, had no possibility of being able to extend its runway. It was therefore decided to find the best location for the future replacement airport. The site chosen was PUDAHUEL.
