Piarco Airport

At Piarco International Airport there are two high-speed taxiways and three connector taxiways (ICAO Code F for new large aircraft). Its runway is long enough to handle any aircraft, many of which enter Piarco to refuel taking advantage of Trinidad's competitive fuel rates. It has 14 aircraft gates with loading bridges from the aircraft to the terminal building.

This technologically state of the art airport has 82 ticket counter positions that operate under SITA's fiber-optic C.U.T.E. system which exceeds the recommended standards of ICAO and IATA. It also has a Flight Information Display System, which serves all airport users and a Baggage Information Display System.

The terminal is a fully air-conditioned, smoke free building, equipped to handle peak-hour passenger traffic of 1,500 processing passengers through a fully computerized and user-friendly immigration system, which minimizes long lines and passenger hassle. This convenience is also found in the Customs hall, which has large baggage / cargo carousels.
Piarco International Airport has the largest atrium in the Caribbean with its 130 foot sky lit dome and luxurious departure lounges as well as a first class duty-free hall.

Airport Security has always been of paramount importance. IONSCAN machines are positioned at various points around the Airport to detect narcotics and explosive devices.

Throughout the Airport, security surveillance systems record and monitor all activities 24/7 using 100 cameras. All inbound and outbound baggage and cargo are sent through 100% X-ray systems. Combined with this technology is AATT airport security comprising over 300 highly trained officers specialized in modern airport security under IATA standards.

Piarco International Airport security is bolstered by the country's police service which has a base at the Airport and provides 24-hour surveillance in and around the airport. The airport also operates with a Category 9 Crash, Fire and Rescue station, which will be Category 10 (highest level) in the very near future.

Tobago is one the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean renowned for its underwater diving and marine wonders. It serves a well-established niche market of European tourists throughout the year. Therefore, Crown Point operates scheduled flights for international airlines such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Monarch Airways and Condor among several others. Inter island domestic flights are served by three airlines with scheduled flights daily.

Airport Facts

Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean region's most developed and industrialized country, is moving ahead with plans to make Piarco International Airport the major hub for the movement of people and cargo to the Americas. The country's robust economy, intelligent labour force and geographic location between North, South and Latin America makes it an ideal trading centre. The Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (AATT) facilitates air and freight services through its two international airports - Piarco International Airport and Crown Point International Airport.

Piarco International Airport, located 25 kilometers east of the capital, Port of Spain, is the largest and most modern airport in the Caribbean. With the addition of Continental Airlines in December, there are now eighteen international airlines and seven cargo carriers that serve twenty-six international destinations operating out of Piarco.

Piarco International Airports' positioning as a regional hub is strengthened with the possible location of the headquarters of the Free Trade Areas of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago. This country is already home to the Association of Caribbean States.
