Upington Airport may be small, but it is by no means quiet - for it does a brisk business in cargo: everything from live sheep and goats, to cars and mining equipment. Not to mention grapes, about one million tons of which leave this Northern Cape town every year.
But the airport is not just a cargo hub. Every day nine ACSA staff serve the two scheduled SA Airlink flights' passengers - most of whom are travelling for business.
Until 1996, however, even Boeing 747s used to land at the airport, which SAA used as a refuelling station for flights to London and Zurich. For this reason, a 4 900m-long runway - the longest on the African continent - was built to accommodate a Boeing 747 with a full load of passengers, cargo and fuel. In fact, the runway is long enough to land a space shuttle! See airport operations for more about Upington Airport's interesting history.
