Wellington Intl Airport Information

Getting There Wellington Airport is only 8km south-east from the city. To get there, either follow the State Highway 1 signs through the Mt Victoria Tunnel; or if you feel like a drive and you have a bit more time, take the road around the bays, starting at Oriental Bay. The trip from town takes from 15-20 minutes, but if you are catching a flight early in the morning or late in the afternoon, allow at least half an hour for travel.

Parking All parking fees are payable upon your exit from the carpark by eftpos cash or credit card. Credit cards accepted are Amex, Diner's Club, Visa and MasterCard.

If you wish to pay cash or eftpos, please do so with the staff positioned at the booths; if you wish to pay credit card you can either pay at the booths or by automatic debit via the machine-operated exit lanes which automatically debit your credit card and issue a receipt.

Our parking services are scheduled for an upgrade over the following twelve months. Details on this will be available soon.

Taxis We have a great taxi operation out of Wellington Airport with a modern fleet (no taxi older than 1994) of just over 1000 taxis and shuttles servicing the area. To operate from the airport every taxi driver every taxi driver must have an 'area knowledge certificate' so there should be no destination in the Greater Wellington Region that they cannot find.

Taxi ranks can be found directly outside the baggage claim area on level 0 of the main terminal. There are two taxi ranks, one being a dedicated lane for Wellington Combined Taxis and the other for all other taxi operators. Taxi operators require a special license to operate from Wellington Airport.

Bus The only bus that operates directly to and from the airport is the Stagecoach Flyer. It runs between Upper Hutt, through Wellington City to the airport and will stop at any bus stop with an orange "flyer" sign on it throughout the route. The bus is easy to spot - being bright orange, and its outbound journey begins on the ground floor at the southern end of the terminal.

The Flyer runs from the airport every half an hour from 7.20am to 8.20pm Monday - Friday; and every hour or half an hour from 7.50am to 8.50pm during the weekends and on public holidays. The cost is between $3 and $8 for an adult fare, depending on how far you are going!

The timetable for the Airport Flyer is available on the Metlink website. Select the timetable for bus route "91 - Airport Flyer" to access details.

Wellington Airport is notable in that its domestic terminal was built, as a temporary measure, inside a corrigated iron hangar and not replaced for many decades. The domestic terminal was known for being overcrowded. However, a major new domestic terminal was completed in 1999, and construction is under way to lengthen the south end of the 1936m runway by 90m in accordance with ICAO safety regulations, with scoping studies for a north end runway extension as of 2005.
